How does it feel to be a Readers’ Choice Award winner for Best Dog Bakery?
I am thrilled to have such a loyal and supportive customer base. I enjoy each of my customers and their pets and look forward to seeing them each Sunday at the Howell Farmer’s Market.

How long have you been in your profession?
I started Cosmo’s Canine Bakery in 2003.

What drew you to your profession?
I had been baking for my own dogs for years and after my Cattle dog/Lab mix Cosmo was diagnosed with cancer I started researching and developing all natural treats for him. The treats were a hit with all my friends who have dogs and they persuaded me to open up a bakery.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Meeting my customers at the market is my favorite part. Since starting the business I have been able to cuddle the dogs and spoil many new customers. I don’t think there’s anything cuter than a puppy tripping down the market aisle and getting to stop at Cosmo’s booth for a treat! I’ve learned many new things from the dedicated pet people who’ve visited with me over the years; debated the merits of one dog food over another, which treatments help, etc.

Any crazy stories to share?
Do dog people actually have crazy stories? I thought they were all perfectly normal, everyday occurrences!

How do think your industry has changed over the years?
I see the biggest change over the years as more natural and/or organic treats being developed. In today’s climate of tainted ingredients, I believe it is up to the local producers to offer the best ingredients and products that they can make for their customers.

Best Doggie Daycare

Winner

Nancy Janoch, Owner
Happy Hounds Dog Day Care, LLC
673 S Main St, Plymouth

How does it feel to be a Readers’ Choice Award winner for Best Doggie Daycare?
We are very excited and honored to be chosen the best dog daycare by your readers! Our clients are the best in the world and we really thank them for their voting too.

What drew you to your profession?
I was in corporate management for over 20 years and decided to leave the corporate rat race for something I really enjoyed doing. It was a very simple choice.dogs! So I put my business experience to good use doing something that allowed be to be around dogs all day long.

What is your favorite part of the job?
The dogs, of course, and their parents. Being around dogs and playing with them and cuddling with them, and even training them just grounds me tremendously. And they always make me laugh! The parents are so in love with their dogs that we seem to immediately have a close human bond too.

Any crazy stories to share?
Oh, I could write a book full of these! And maybe I will when I retire. I think one of the funniest things that happened recently was that we were interviewing for a new staff member and the supervisor was giving her a tour. At one point while they were talking, one of the new male puppies just walked right up to the supervisor’s ankles, lifted his leg, and gave her foot a squirt bath. [It was] hard to keep a straight face during the interview. We have a 11-month-old Bulldog who keeps me laughing all day long. He uses his body to slam into the three trash cans outside and knock them over from a running start. We call it bulldog bowling!

Do you have any pets at home?
I have had as many as 24 pets at one time (counting a litter of puppies), and had seven Golden Retrievers and Labs at one time. I now call myself the “Doggie Grandma,” taking care of others’ dogs all the time and returning them to their [guardians] at the end of the day. Sometimes I watch some of them at my house over the weekend too so I am most always surrounded by my four-legged grandkids! I plan to get my next dog when I retire.

How do think your industry has changed over the years?
Very much! And it is very much in motion continuing to evolve! When I started the pet sitting business in 1995 nobody knew what it was and I had to educate the public in my community. Now it is known to everyone. Dog daycare was the next natural step, and even in the past four years since Happy Hounds has opened it has changed tremendously. People consider dogs their children and treat them accordingly, offering them all the pampering and good care they can get. Specialty services like our particular dog daycare are very popular, providing a home-like atmosphere and one-on-one constant contact with our staff, making your Fido a happy and tired-out dog at the end of the day.
