Interior decorating maven Jonathan Adler dishes out sound (and unsound) decorating tips for people and pets

By Jason A. Heidemann

Does the name Jonathan Adler ring a bell? If you don’t instantly recognize the whiz kid decorator, you probably know his work. The New York-based interior designer has created sets for the Today show, Sex and the City, The Apprentice, and Will and Grace among others. Adler’s work is best described as pop culture chic with an emphasis on individuality and personal style. His first book, My Prescription for Anti-depressive Living is a larger-than-life look at home decorating. The ubiquitous presence of his Norwich Terrier Liberace, as well as his colorful line of pet products is proof that companion animals are an integral part of his mad genius. Adler paused during his day to discuss with us the importance of decorating with pets in mind.

Tails: Your book, My Prescription for Anti-depressive Living, presents an exuberant vision of both interior design and good living. Do you think the two are inevitably intertwined?
Jonathan Adler: Definitely! I truly believe that a great home, a home that expresses who you are and what you love, will make you happy. Good decorating is like a good dose of Zoloft!

Tails: What are some fears people have about home decorating?
JA: I think that people decorate for the neighbors rather than for themselves. When your home is a true reflection of who you are and is full of stuff that means something to you, you’ll feel great.

Tails: You have an adorable Norwich Terrier named Liberace. What can you tell us about him?
JA: He’s heaven, cute as a button, extremely mischievous, not incredibly bright, and extraordinarily handsome. Sadly, he’s not a lapdog. Liberace is always nearby, but he stays three feet away—he really makes me work to get his affection.

Tails: In Anti-depressive Living he pops up in various surroundings. Does he travel well?
JA: We take him everywhere. His travel bag fits under the seat in the airplane and he’s a great flyer.
Tails: In the book there is a portrait of him and underneath it reads, “refuses to poop in the rain.” Is this true?
JA: I’m afraid so. As [we talk], it’s pouring outside and he refuses to poop. I’m praying for some sunshine!

Tails: Can you offer any advice on how to have both pets and a nice home?
JA: I think that pets are the key to a nice home! Furry friends are
sure-fire happiness inducers. I believe that pets should be allowed on all furniture and decorating should always be pet-friendly.

Tails: A lot of homes are now being built and designed with pets in mind (like
built-in doggie showers for example). What do you think of this trend?
JA: Love it! I’m more interested in doggie’s needs than peoples’.

Tails: Tell us about your line of pet products.
JA: I make dog and cat bowls and dog beds so that your pets’ surroundings can be as groovy as your own.
