Prison Mates
Some inmates are glad that Indiana’s prisons have gone to the dogs. Earlier this summer, Greyhounds entered four correctional facilities for a program called Second Chance at Life: Inmates and Greyhounds Prison Partnership. The program, which began five years ago, saves retired racing dogs from Florida. Two inmates volunteer to take care of each Greyhound for eight to ten weeks, which gives the dogs time to be trained and adjust to daily life before being adopted. Six other states, including Ohio, Colorado, and Tennessee, are involved in the program, which is funded by donations and grants. If you are interested in volunteering or adopting, call (765) 278-9435.
Franklin grows for the animals
After seven years the Franklin Board of Zoning Appeals has approved plans to allow the Johnson County Animal Shelter to build a new facility, which will be four times larger than the current shelter. The construction will move the shelter on Hospital Road in Franklin to 5 acres north of Commerce Drive and west of Graham Road. By building a larger shelter, the number of animal holding areas will double, there will be an increased amount of run area, and there will be rooms for aggressive cats and dogs. The proposed shelter will cost $900,000 and if funding is approved, it could open as early as next spring. To make a donation, call the shelter at (317) 736-3924.
A rational idea
Pop ARF artist Nathan Janes has joined with Rational Animal, a nonprofit organization that aims to increase awareness of at-risk animals. Janes has created a special pewter lapel pin, available at animal rescue facilities, that will help with fund-raising projects and support Rational Animal’s Animal Guardian Ribbon Campaign. The orange pin, which is in the shape of a ribbon with a paw print at the top, promotes animal guardianship rather than ownership. In addition to the pin, Janes has also created an original portrait of a dog sitting in front of New York City skyscrapers wearing an animal guardian ribbon and an orange “Adopt Me” vest.
