Humane Society needs your help

Last month the Humane Society of Missouri was awarded custody of 157 neglected dogs and puppies that were rescued along with help from the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Department from a property near Senath. The dogs had limited human contact and little veterinary care. Many of the animals suffered from mange, hair loss, malnutrition, and heartworms. After the dogs arrived at the Humane Society several litters of puppies were born. All of the puppies will be spayed or neutered and fostered with their mothers until they are ready for adoption. The dogs will also be put up for adoption depending on the progress of their medical treatment. The Humane Society of Missouri is asking for help as well as foster homes for these animals.

St. Louis area rescue group honored in D.C.

Leann Zalasky of Rescued Racers (St. Ann) was one of 10 animal ambassadors nationwide honored in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. May 10 on behalf of their organization’s efforts to help homeless animals. The rescue groups were chosen for their commitment to Purina Pro Plan’s Rally to the Rescue campaign, a program launched in 2005 dedicated to raising funds and awareness for pet rescue nationwide. Actress and pet lover Kristin Davis (Sex and the City) was on hand to give a special recognition to the groups. The honored guests were also given the opportunity to brief their local Congressmen on a day in the life of a rescue worker, including their unique success stories. Rescued Racers is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and adopting out Greyhounds. In addition to receiving the Ambassador Recognition Award from Purina Pro Plan, the group is also celebrating their 10th anniversary.

AFB International gets new location in St. Charles

AFB International, the largest supplier of pet food flavors, has put an estimated 10 million dollars towards a new headquarters in the Missouri Research Park located in St. Charles. The company, which is currently located in the nearby community of O’Fallon, plans to double its work force in St. Louis.

President and CEO Jackie Levin says one of the reasons they chose the Missouri Research Park is because it is close to their O’Fallon location, “Which will allow us to continue to have great interaction with manufacturing,” she says. “[Also] we are in a growth mode.”

The new headquarters will include a 16,000 square foot lab space, 10,000 square feet of space for administration, and space for a production research lab. “Other than normal upgrades to the offices, we will be adding a number of laboratories and pilot facilities,” Levin says.

Their five-year goal is to double their local workforce. Currently, they have offices all over the world including The Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, and California, which is connected to their Asia Pacific business. “We became a world leader in palatability first through superior technology,” says Levin. “Strong commitment to customer service and support” is also a key reason for success, she adds. The headquarters will open during the late summer.
