Waggin' Weekend Getaways

Hip local lodgings for you and your pet

by Jason Heidemann

Taking a break after a 40-hour (or more like 60-hour) work week can be the perfect way to relax the soul and restore the spirit. For many of us, spending those hours with our pets only adds to the allure. Whether you choose to stay close to home or take a jog out into the country, these places will not only accept your pets, they’ll practically sit up and beg for you to bring them.

The Peninsula
108 E Superior St, Chicago
(312) 337-2888, www.Chicago.Peninsula.com
Rate: $490-$795 Pet Rate: $35 a night
Oh, if only we humans could all live as well as pets do during their stay at the Peninsula Chicago. This luxury hotel has previously held the highest spot as Conde Naste magazine’s #1 hotel in the world and animals would have a hard time disagreeing. Dogs are treated to in-room massage therapy, dog sitting, dog walking, and doggie mattresses with 300-thread-count sheets. All pets (including your cat) will be welcomed with a special welcome amenity, pet bed, and water and food bowls and can even choose from their own room service menu (Tabby Tuna Tartare anyone?). Meanwhile, humans can enjoy the Spa at the Peninsula, dinner at Shanghai Terrace, awesome city views, or just having the best of Chicago right at their doorstep.

White Rabbit Inn
14634 Red Arrow Hwy, Lakeside, MI
(800) 967-2224

Rate: $175-$420 Pet Rate: None
Located in the heart of Michigan’s Harbor Country, the White Rabbit bills itself as a couples retreat, which could mean you and your pet (maybe you’ll even invite your significant other if (s)he’s lucky). The inn is a series of cabins, two of which accept companion animals. The first pet-friendly option is Bill’s Cabin, named after a visiting orange Tabby of the same name. It contains a kitchenette, queen-sized bed, and hot tub/spa. Dusty’s Cabin, named after a horse who liked to dance, is also pet-friendly and contains a king-sized bed, full kitchen, skylights, and hot tub/spa as well. Harbor County is just an hour-and-a-half drive from Chicago. Be sure to notify the owners before bringing any canine or feline friends, and keep the inn pet-friendly by cleaning up after Fido.
