Pet Loss Support
Public Group active 1 week, 1 day agoFor those of us who have lost a furry friend.
This is a group to help people work through the grief when a beloved pet passes on. I wanted to create a place for pet owners to talk openly and as frequently as needed about their loss. The members here have all gone through the experience of a pet dying, everyone understands the heartbreak that is felt, and how difficult it really is. This is an environment of people who relate to each other over an intensely difficult event in their lives. Any Pet owner can come here and let out all the pain and sorrow they feel, and take comfort in knowing everyone here has been there before, and has felt how they feel.
After my wonderful pup, Jun Jun, passed away I came to some conclusions about pet loss and bereavement. Mainly, I now completely appreciate the absolute misery and emptiness felt when they depart our world.
I had no idea how to handle it, so in order to ease the hurt I just started talking to all my friends and family. Immediately I noticed that the friends who still had their dogs, really didn’t want to talk about his death, and never asked me how I was holding up after the first day. On the other hand, the people who had lost pets would talk to me about everything. As much and as long as I needed, They offered ideas about moving on and shared how they dealt with it. And after a week of conversations, I became very aware that I was a friend that never offered any real support. I wasn’t there for people I call my best friends.
Although I now believe that only other pet owners, who have experienced the loss of a pet, is able offer true support and words of encouragement.
When a pet dies, the owner rarely receives the same level of support that is given after a human’s death. Most people don’t realize that grief felt over the loss of a pet, is the same grief felt over any loss. Even friends and family may not comprehend how significant the death is for a bereaved owner. As a result, the support a bereaved owner receives isn’t very prominent. Also there are some inconsiderate people who will say that it was just a pet.
If encountered, a lack of support coupled with the misguided intentions of some people, an owner may think that their immense despair isn’t valid. This can make the process of mourning even more challenging, They might begin to feel uncomfortable talking about the loss and will hold in their grief and emotions. Only processing and dealing with the sadness behind closed doors.
Anyone is welcome here. There is compassion and understanding. Whether your friend has been gone a day or many years, your feelings are important, and your input and experience will help other people.
Time does help lessen the pain, but even as the years go by you never forget them. Your will love and miss them forever.

Pet Loss Support 3 months, 3 weeks agoMy riding trainer Jordina unfortunately lost her corgi named “Andy” when he got spooked by fireworks on New Years Eve and ran off into the woods. She was visiting friends in Westport, CT and normally resides in Plymouth, MA. He is male, 11 years old and the sweetest creature known to man. However, because he has been on his own for over three…[Read more]

Pet Loss Support : 10 months, 3 weeks agoI’m sure everyone is here for a reason like my own. I said goodbye to a beautiful and very senior mini doxie, Zeppelin, in March. I do want to let those of you with more recent losses that it gets better. For a week or more, I was at a loss, not having anyone for whom I needed to get up in the middle of the night to clean up after or comfort or…[Read more]

Pet Loss Support : 12 months agoBeen a horrible year so far. Lost my brother-in-law unexpectedly on March 12, then had my 12 yr. old Collie mix Sedona euthanized on March 22 from bone cancer and other issues. Then had to euthanize my 11yr. old Retriever mix on April 15th from kidney failure. They had been with me through so much, including the death of my husband in 2005. It…[Read more]

Pet Loss Support : 1 year, 2 months agoWe lost our 15yr old beagle, Meggie on feb 2,2011. We miss her so much. Our other dog and both cats have really been mourning her loss. We’ve always had cats and dogs and like most, treat them like royalty. As hard as it is to say goodbye, we’d never not have them in our lives They have all enriched our lives in so many ways!

Pet Loss Support : 1 year, 2 months agoThanks for this amazing group. I recently had to say goodbye to both of my cats. Was one of the hardest things I have gone through…they were 17 years young! It is a very difficult time and while I did receive a lot of support, not everyone realizes they are like family members. Time is the best healer…
