BatsThomas Barnes dispels myths about bats

By Brendan Quealy

Kentucky has more than a few claims to fame. From the Kentucky Derby—the most popular horse race in the world—to Kentucky bourbon and, lest we forget, the Louisville Slugger baseball bat. Because April is National Bat Appreciation Month, we must to recognize the other kind of bat—the bats of the winged variety.

Thomas Barnes of Kentucky’s Division of Forestry has been working for decades to ensure that bats are kept safe and that people are aware of the facts about these creatures. “Few animals are as misunderstood as bats,” explains Barnes. “They are the subject of myths, misunderstandings, and folklore that make them among the most feared animals in Kentucky.Bats are relentlessly persecuted wherever they are found. The presence of a bat in a house probably causes more alarm than does any other wildlife species.”

Jefferson Animal Hospitals Announce Health Fair for People and Their Pets

March 23, 2012 in Louisville, Louisville Shelter News by Jillian at Tails

Jefferson Animal HospitalJefferson Animal Hospitals (JAH) will host a free health fair on May 12, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., called People and Pets Staying Healthy Together. It will be held at their new Fern Creek location, 6902 Bardstown Road in the Cedar Springs Shopping Centre. The goal is to educate the community on both animal and human health and wellness. Pet owners can bring their pets for free screenings and receive their own health screenings as well.

JAH is a leader in One Health, an American Veterinary Medical Association initiative that promotes the importance of both human and animal health/wellness. In addition to JAH medical staff, who will screen animals for diabetes, high blood pressure, tooth decay, arthritis, etc.; nurses will be on hand to provide services and information to pet owners, including flu shots, blood glucose readings, body condition scores and mammograms.

Pat Kennedy Arrington, DVM, CVFP, who owns JAH-Fern Creek and its sister hospital, Jefferson Animal Hospital Regional Emergency Center, is one of only 15 veterinarians and animal-related professionals in the U.S. certified in the new field of Veterinary Family Practice. In October she was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA).

“People and Pets Staying Healthy Together is a free resource to the entire community,” said Dr. Arrington. “We are involving a variety of vendors and nonprofit groups that offer pet services, and we will provide valuable information that will allow people to be proactive about their own health and about the well-being of their animal companions.”

For more information about the health fair, contact JAHFC at 502-499-6535 or go to www.jeffersonanimalhospital.com.

Hey! My name is Roy and I am a big dog with a big heart. I am very affectionate, and I love being petted, and sticking close to my human friends. I get along well with cats, and I am great with little kids. I also enjoy other dogs and meet a lot of them on my walks—I’m always excited to make new friends. I’m 5 years old, have plenty of spunk, and a big personality! I am a sweet dog, and will make my forever family very happy.

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?
Maybe an elm or a pine tree! I’m actually learning that trees are a great place to answer “nature’s call.”

What is your favorite board game?
I move around a lot, so maybe I would be good at charades!

Why should YOU go home with a family right now?
I am still perfecting my manners, but I’m getting better each and every day.

Who is your best friend?
I don’t really have a bestie, I always like meeting new people and dogs.

Hello I’m Willow! I’m extremely sweet, gentle, and very calm. And I’m enjoying my retirement. I get along with other dogs, and come when called. And I go nuts for my toy box—there are just so many great things to play with! I love kids, and would be happy in a house with little ones. I don’t need a large yard—I’m perfectly fine with a soft bed in a nice warm house. I know I‘m just the dog for you!

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?
Why a willow tree, of course! I’m flexible.

What do you dream of at night?
Being petted and curling up next to you. At night, and at naptime, too!

Why should YOU go home with a family right now?
I am the perfect companion for a family looking for a calm and affectionate dog.

Beach or mountains?
I wouldn’t mind lazing around on the beach for the day. Maybe we can go for a trip!

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Just me, relaxing in your house, with you too, of course.
