Metro Animal Services Encourages Pet Owners to Start the New Year Off Right By Licensing Their Pets

January 6, 2012 in Louisville, Louisville Shelter News by Jillian at Tails

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) will waive all late fees starting January 5, 2012 thru February 29th for cats, dogs and ferrets whose licenses have either lapsed or have never been purchased.

“Licensing your pet is extremely important and it’s the law,” said Louisville Metro Animal Services Director Justin Scally. “If you ever lose your pet, licensing can help you reunite. License numbers provide our staff with your contact information. If a Metro Animal Control Officer finds a roaming dog or cat with a license, the officer may be able to provide your pet a free ride home.”

Citizens can license their altered pets for $9 and unaltered for $50. The late license amnesty can save people a great deal and is an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed. Late fees can range from $47.50 for altered animals to $195.00 for unaltered animals.

LMAS uses funding from licenses to support operations. Staff takes care of stray pets, investigates public safety threats as it relates to animals and investigates allegations of animal cruelty/neglect.

Metro Animal Services is also implementing a $30 fee for owner requested euthanasia. This policy is necessary to help defray costs for this service.

Don’t delay – License your pet today at either Metro Animal Services location:

November 16, 2011 in Louisville, Louisville Shelter News by Jillian at Tails

Kentucky Humane SocietyPark Community Federal Credit Union and the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) have partnered to create the area’s first charitable debit card. The card will be available at all Park Community Federal Credit Union locations, beginning November 15, 2011. This new debit card costs $5, all of which goes to KHS to help look after the hundreds of adoptable animals in our care. (Park Community has a similar agreement with Kosair Charities.)

In honor of this exciting new partnership and debit card, the Blankenbaker Parkway location of Park Community Federal Credit Union will hostedt a kick-off celebration on Tuesday, November 15th at 5:30 p.m.

Why should you sign up for a new KHS Debit Card? Because KHS is a world-class non-profit that’s been serving pets and people in Louisville since 1884. KHS was recently named one of the Top Ten Most Fiscally Responsible Charities by Worth Magazine and Charity Navigator. As a 501c3 non-profit, KHS depends on people and local businesses, not government, for our funding. We work with a variety of animal welfare agencies to make reduce the homeless pet population – and make the Louisville area better for both pets and people.

Just stop by any Park Community location and ask how you can sign up for this new debit card. Be the first of your friends to have this stylish new card, and help the dogs and cats of the Kentucky Humane Society!

Rock-a-Bully

November 7, 2011 in Louisville, Louisville Shelter News by Jillian at Tails

The Rock-a-Bully event takes place next Sunday, November 13th from 3 PM – 11 PM at the Headliners Music Hall. This event benefits Saving Sunny.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the show. Kids under 13 are free.

Saving Sunny, Inc. is a non-profit animal rescue organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of animals from circumstances, such as cruelty, neglect, dog fighting, domestic violence and others.

Saving Sunny, Inc. is named in honor of Sunny the pit bull who, in July 2009, was thrown from the Clark Memorial Bridge and miraculously survived the 80ft. drop into the Ohio River. Patrons and staff at Joe’s Crab Shack on the riverfront witnessed the unimaginable act and raced to the waterside to call to the dazed and struggling dog who was soon pulled from the water by a Louisville Metro Fire & Rescue team who happened to be training on the river that day. Kelsey Westbrook, a server at Joe’s Crab Shack, adopted Sunny on the spot and gave her the name that reflected her happy and trusting disposition as she greeted the crowd who waited for her on dry land.

100 Pit Bulls to Get Free Spay/Neuters & Microchip

October 24, 2011 in Louisville, Louisville Shelter News by Jillian at Tails

Kentucky Humane SocietyIn honor of national Pit Bull Awareness Day (Oct. 22), Kentucky Humane Society’s S.N.I.P. Clinic will offer free spay/neuter surgeries and microchips to the first 100 pit bull owners who call the clinic through October 31. (Thanks to 24PetWatch for the free microchips.)

The goal of S.N.I.P. & Chip is to help curb the overpopulation of pit bulls and pit bull mixes in the Louisville area. Spaying or neutering pit bulls also results in a longer, healthier life for the pets and fewer worries for their loving owners.

Clinic appointments are required and can be made by calling the S.N.I.P. Clinic at (502) 636-3491.

Low-cost vaccinations are also available at the time of surgery. For more information on the S.N.I.P. Clinic, you can also visit www.kyhumane.org.

The full-time, low-cost S.N.I.P. Clinic is dedicated entirely to spay/neuter. Since opening in 2007, the clinic has altered nearly 40,000 felines and canines. The high-quality, high-volume approach is a milestone for the area, as the region’s first program large enough to successfully combat pet overpopulation.

Tony Stewart Gives the Nod to Louisville Weimaraner Rescue,

October 13, 2011 in Louisville, Louisville Shelter News by Jillian at Tails

Two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart evokes several images — owner of Tony Stewart Racing, co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, a highly competitive driver, and a tireless advocate of auto racing in its many forms. And, increasingly, Tony is also well-known as a dedicated philanthropist. Like his racing style, Tony Stewart pushes the limits to help others through his Foundation.

The Tony Stewart Foundation just announced the winners for its “Tony’s Grant Accelerator” competition. Louisville Weimaraner Rescue, Inc. has been selected as 1 of 40 charities from throughout the United States to be known as an Accelerator Charity and receive a monetary grant. More than 300 nominations were reviewed by the foundation and 72 organizations were invited to submit the full grant application.

“We created this competition to uncover terrific charities that are serving children and animals in innovative ways,” remarked Stewart. “The result is a collection of charities – large and small – with a common denominator of having a strong volunteer network and a dedicated staff to deliver programs.”

Louisville Weimaraner Rescue, Inc. was awarded $5,000 in grant monies to be used for boarding homeless rescued Weimaraners while they await an open foster home. “We have been overwhelmed with the number of Weimaraners needing to come into rescue and the grant monies will now allow us to help even more,” said Rescue President, Denise King.

Louisville Weimaraner Rescue, Inc. was founded in 1997 and serves the Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia areas. To learn more about the Rescue, please visit our website at www.louisvilleweimrescue.com . To follow us on the social networks, please visit our Facebook page at: LouisvilleWeimRescue and our Twitter account at: @LOUWeimRescue.

Since 2004, the Tony Stewart Foundation has awarded more than $5 million in grants to organizations serving children, animals and drivers. Complete information about the foundation plus photos & stories of the 40 Grant Accelerator Charities are available at www.TonyStewartFoundation.org
