Local Hero – A Change to Save Lives

Harlan County Animal ShelterAnimal shelter dramatically reduces euthanasia rate
By Brendan Quealy

When an animal shelter is euthanizing 98 percent of the animals it is taking in every year, something needs to be done. At that point, it’s a concern that they are putting down healthy animals who could have led happy and productive lives as a family pets. When Duncan Caldwell took over the Harlan County Animal Shelter in 2005, he made it his mission to save as many animals as possible. “With euthanasia numbers so high, you’ve got to sit back and say to yourself, ‘There’s got to be a better way,” says Caldwell.  Now, animals who find their way to Harlan County have a greater chance of being given proper veterinary care and being placed in a forever home. Since that 98 percent figure was released in 2005, Caldwell, his staff, and volunteers, helped reduce the euthanasia rate to less than 10 percent. Caldwell estimates that they are euthanizing about six percent of the animals that come in.

Of course the question is: How did they do it? Well, shelter employees from around the country, Chicago and Minneapolis for example, travel to Louisville to take animals out of the Harlan County shelter and adopt them out, back in their own cities. This partnership allows Caldwell to transfer animals to shelters that have higher adoption rates. The shelter has reduced the number of animals coming in by heavily promoting spay and neuter services. Priority number one for Caldwell was making sure that every dog and cat is spayed or neutered before the animal is adopted. The shelter offers low-cost/high-quality spay/neuters for families that do not have the financial means to pay those veterinary costs.

Hey! My name is Mason and I am a 1-year-old Lab mix. I am as lovable as I am handsome. As you can tell, I am also very humble. I look like a pure black Lab with a touch of Husky, so I’ve got these adorable, fluffy ears. I will make a terrific family dog because I am friendly and loving. How can you say no to this face, huh?

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?
A young one with a great deal of potential. I am probably finished growing, but I’ve still got some maturing to do. I know you can help me with that.

What is your favorite board game?
No board games for me, thank you very much. I’ve got too much energy and would be much happier with a trip to the dog park.

If you won the lottery, what would you do?
How about this, if you adopt me I can guarantee that you’ve already won the lottery!

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Well, I’m already a good dog—so I’d like to be a GREAT dog.

Positive Change in Frankfort regarding Humane Treatment of Companion Animals

January 7, 2012 in Louisville by Jillian at Tails

Dog in kennelGet your pencil out now and circle, February 23rd on your calendar. The Humane Society of the United States is stepping up to form a group to go to Frankfort for Kentucky Humane Day at our capitol.

Unfortunately, KY ranks as one of the worst states for humane treatment of companion animals. What happened recently in Henry County regarding the puppy mill/hoarding situation was (at a minimum) deplorable, inexcusable torture to the animals having to endure that treatment. Metro Animal Services Encourages Pet Owners to Start the New Year Off Right By Licensing Their Pets

January 6, 2012 in Louisville, Louisville Shelter News by Jillian at Tails

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) will waive all late fees starting January 5, 2012 thru February 29th for cats, dogs and ferrets whose licenses have either lapsed or have never been purchased.

“Licensing your pet is extremely important and it’s the law,” said Louisville Metro Animal Services Director Justin Scally. “If you ever lose your pet, licensing can help you reunite. License numbers provide our staff with your contact information. If a Metro Animal Control Officer finds a roaming dog or cat with a license, the officer may be able to provide your pet a free ride home.”

Citizens can license their altered pets for $9 and unaltered for $50. The late license amnesty can save people a great deal and is an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed. Late fees can range from $47.50 for altered animals to $195.00 for unaltered animals.

LMAS uses funding from licenses to support operations. Staff takes care of stray pets, investigates public safety threats as it relates to animals and investigates allegations of animal cruelty/neglect.

Metro Animal Services is also implementing a $30 fee for owner requested euthanasia. This policy is necessary to help defray costs for this service.

Don’t delay – License your pet today at either Metro Animal Services location:

Metro Animal Services Wants To Find Every Animal A Home For The Holidays

December 9, 2011 in Louisville by Jillian at Tails

Louisville Animal HouseLouisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) is asking the public to open their hearts to animals looking for a Home for the Holidays. “No one wants to spend the holidays away from friends and family, and that includes the pets at our shelter,” said Metro Animal Services Director Justin Scally. “The majority of animals surrendered to the shelter or turned in as strays are loving, great animals that will make wonderful pets.”

During our Home for the Holidays campaign, we will celebrate the one year anniversary of Animal House Adoption Center. On Saturday, December 10, all regularly priced adoptions will be 50% off, as we strive to place as many pets as possible into quality homes with responsible owners. All pets are spayed/neutered, licensed, microchipped and vaccinated.

If your family is unable to adopt at the present time, you can still help. Visit Animal House (3516 Newburg Road) or our website to make a donation.

You can also purchase a “comfy” bed for one of our animals. For details visit www.kuranda.com

Local Hero—No Controversy Here

November 30, 2011 in December 2011, Louisville by Tails Magazine

Medi-Vet AmericaBreakthrough stem cell procedure helps animals
By Brendan Quealy

Whenever the subject of stem cell therapy is broached, there is a high probability that some level of debate may break out, given it’s controversial nature. However, Dr. Clark Slone of the Henry County Animal Clinic offers a breakthrough treatment that is not only completely safe and ethical, but very effective as well.

In late September, Slone performed the first in-clinic stem cell therapy on a 7-year-old, 325-pound goat that had suffered a torn ACL, on top of carpal joints that were already degenerating.

The process uses stem cells harvested from the animal’s own fat, which sometimes contain up to a billion of the regenerative cells. Once the cells are activated, they are injected into the point of pain as well as administered intravenously. Within a month, the animal is usually moving around nearly, if not completely, free of pain.

Since the discovery of this method, Medi-Vet America, which produces the stem cell therapy kits, has spread to 42 of the 50 United States. Jeremy Delk, the managing director at Medi-Vet, reports that “some areas of research and therapy are progressing faster than in human medicine.” Read the rest of this entry →
