A few days ago, TAILS shared disturbing news of proposed legislation in California to end funds that support public animal shelters, which will lead to the euthanizing of thousands of animals every year. So, we were VERY excited to hear the good news from our friends at Best Friends Animal Society.

Best Friends has announced the official grand opening of Best Friends Animal Society Pet Adoption and Spay/Neuter Services. The facility, which will operate from the Northeast Valley Animal Care Center in Mission Hills, California, previously had never opened to the public because of budget shortfalls. It will be utilized as a lifesaving, high-volume adoption and spay/neuter center. Read the rest of this entry →

Former Ballerina Zina Bethune Killed While Helping an Injured Animal

February 14, 2012 in Featured, Home, Los Angeles by Jillian at Tails

Zina BethuneThis story breaks my heart because I can see how easily it could happen to myself or any one of my animal loving friends. As an animal lover you can’t resist helping an animal in need, often ignoring the risk.

Famous ballet dancer, actress and teacher Zina Bethune was hit by two vehicles and killed after getting out of her car to help an injured animal.

Bethune, 66, left car on Sunday and got out to help what turned out to be a dead opossum, police Sgt. Jeffrey Siggers told the Los Angeles Times.

Bethune trained under famed dance instructor George Balanchine and began dancing with the New York City Ballet at age 14 despite suffering from scoliosis and lymphedema.

“I was born to dance, in my heart, but not in my body,” she told a Los Angeles Times reporter in 1999.

She also taught dance to thousands of disabled Southern California children through her nonprofit dance company.

Our hearts go out to Bethune’s family and may this be a lesson to all of us selfless animal lovers that we need to take the proper precautions when helping animals in need.

How Much is that Kitty in the Window?

Helping animals find homes in a unique wayLA Hero February 2012 - Jean and Craig McCoy

Jean McCoy felt she needed to make a difference in the lives of shelter animals. She saw how frustrated shelter workers were becoming due to the increase in the number of strays coming in and how many animals had to be put down. So she opened up her heart, and her store, to help shelter pets find their forever homes.

What McCoy does is neither easy nor cheap. She goes to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center every week and finds cats who need homes. She takes them to the vet, has them spayed or neutered, microchipped, and updated on vaccinations. McCoy then brings these grateful animals back to her pet boutique, To Wag For, in Santa Monica where she puts them up for adoption. She pays for this out of her own pocket and does it out of the goodness of her heart.

A representative from the Baldwin Park Animal Center says that McCoy is “a very nice lady” and that she “really helps out some of the kitties here.”

“It’s tough because the shelters here are very, very overcrowded,” says McCoy of Los Angeles County animal shelters, which have one of the highest animal intake rates in the country.

McCoy says that it is not uncommon for boxes of animals to be dropped off at the shelter in Pomona in the short time she is there picking up cats. Although McCoy has three dogs and considers herself a dog person, she has been primarily rescuing cats.

“Cats are easier to work with,” explains McCoy. “Usually when I work with a dog, I just do one at a time, but with cats I have the space to do more at once.”

McCoy uses her own pet boutique to keep the animals while they are up for adoption. When the store closes for the night, she either brings them home or they are fostered with another family. Her hope is that when people come into her store to buy pet food, toys, and leashes, they will fall in love with one of her rescues.

Before she began bringing dogs and cats to her store, McCoy would hang their pictures up, and keep the animals in foster homes.

“It made a huge difference when I started bringing them into the store instead of just posting pictures from the shelter,” says McCoy. “They also seem to get adopted quicker when there are more of them instead of just one or two.”

Still, she knows that she cannot keep this up, but she is hopeful to be recognized as a 501(c)(3) in early 2012.

“The bottom line is that I can’t keep doing this, this way,” says McCoy. “These animals mean a lot to me, but I just can’t afford to keep paying all of these vet bills.”

Money is an issue for many more people than just McCoy, and she knows that.

“It has been good and bad,” says McCoy. “It has been a learning experience, and it’s been rewarding getting to know the people that I work with now. Their hearts are in the right place, but they are limited by the lack of resources and the increasing number of animals that come in every day.”

McCoy believes the best way people can help the animal overpopulation problem is to have their pets spayed or neutered, donate to their local animal shelters, and when thinking about getting a pet—rescue one from a shelter.

Hi, my name is Huckleberry and I’m an active 5-month old boy who would love a home to call my own. Although I’m just a little guy right now, I will be a large dog when I grow up. I am very smart and would benefit from Puppy 101, basic obedience, and maybe even an agility class! And, I’m getting better at my potty training every day.

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?
Well, right now I am just a sapling, but pretty soon I am going to grow into a big strong California Redwood.

What movie star would you want to portray you in a movie of your life?
I live in the land of actors—Hollywood. I’m sure I have my pick of the litter (get it?) when it comes to finding the right guy to play me.

What is your favorite board game?
Board games? More like “bored” games. Am I right? Let’s go outside and play fetch or take me for a walk.

Beach or mountains?
Oh, that’s easy. I’m a Cali dog—lets go to the beach, baby!

Hamburger or hot dog?
I’m a growing boy; give me two of each.

I am an inquisitive 6-year-old girl who is very social and sweet. I love to hang out with just about anyone and I do well with other pets. I’d love to come to a house with another cat so I could have a playmate. I also adore kids!  I’m a lovebug, and  am part of the Underdog (& Cat) program, which means I have a special adoption fee.

If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?
I would be the kind that provides for others. The fruit would be my friendship, the shade my loyalty, and the beauty would be my cuteness.

What is your favorite board game?
I like any games that make people laugh and have a good time. Maybe a nice round of charades would be fun—I am quite the actress.

If you won the lottery, what would you do?
Oh my God, I won the lottery?! I’m going to buy SO much catnip.

Why should YOU go home with a family right now?
I am really friendly. Plus didn’t you hear? I just won the lottery.

Pink or purple?
I think I would look striking in a collar of either color.

I Spayed L.A.

January 25, 2012 in Los Angeles by Tails Magazine

On January 28th, Stray Cat Alliance continues its “I Spayed L.A.” program in South Los Angeles to address feral, stray and homeless cat overpopulation. Everyone is welcome to join and hear how Stray Cat Alliance is serving the community at Saturday’s event. Here’s a short video to give you an idea of what to expect.

What:
South Los Angeles “I Spayed L.A.,” which provides L.A.’s poorest demographic areas with spay/neuter and other health services for cats and kittens, both owned and free-roaming in the neighborhood. The program begins in the zip code 90037, an area just south of the USC campus with a population of about 60,000 residents and 12,000 cats.

Who:
Stray Cat Alliance, a nonprofit with an 11-year history in Los Angeles, along with local organizational partners, volunteers, and residents of 90037.

Why:
Like a grassroots political campaign, I Spayed L.A. uses proven community organizing tactics to help control the feral cat population and emphasize responsible cat care. Volunteers will go door-to-door; block and neighborhood captains will provide information and resources so local residents are empowered to help their own communities. There are now two well-stocked trap depots in the area, and residents are taught how to use them humanely. Spay/neuters are performed locally at Animal Rescue Center in South LA, and paid for by Stray Cat Alliance.

When:
Saturday January 28, 11:00 a.m.

Where:
Vermont Square Park, 1256 W. 47th Street (47th and Budlong)

About Stray Cat Alliance
Stray Cat Alliance works for a no-kill nation, where every cat has a right to be safe, healthy and valued. Since 2000, it has empowered hundreds of volunteers and thousands of community members to care for more than 75,000 Southern California cats in need. Stray Cat Alliance performs Trap-Neuter-Return and other health services, and runs an adoption program in Los Angeles, placing thousands of cats in homes. Stray Cat Alliance advocates humane care of homeless cats, and reducing kill rates for cats in shelters today. Visit Stray Cat Alliance for more information.

Pop singer Pink came to the rescue of a puppy named Stella by giving more than $5000 to pay for a life-saving operation.

The sweet pup was badly injured after some heartless person threw her off an overpass in LA.

Pink donated $5000 to Ace of Hearts Dog Rescue to save the puppy’s life.

Stella has made a full recovery and was recently adopted by a loving family!

Pink may be known for her edgy, bad-girl image on the outside but by saving Stella we can tell she has a heart of gold on the inside.

Talk show host and animal lover Ellen DeGeneres, and her wife, Portia de Rossi, will soon be opening a vegan restaurant in San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, and were recently inspired to take their project a step further and work on a line of vegan options for pets as well. Is there anything these two can’t do?

“The couple also are developing a line of vegan pet foods – after discovering a void in the market for people looking to feed their dogs and cats vegan vittles,” reports Chicago Sun-Times.

Unfortunately, at this time, there is no time frame for its release, or whether they will cater to smaller animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs.

The duo has been vegan for several years and do not consume any animal products at all, including butter, eggs, or milk. They are so passionate they even created a website for vegans earlier this year which features recipes and information. Keep up the good work, ladies!

Every day this month, we’ll be providing a Holiday Pet Safety ‘Quick Tip’ to help make sure your dog and cat can enjoy the festivities with the human family, safely. Some days, we’ll have an ‘Open Mic’ and allow you to share your top safety tips, too!

December 1st – Traveling with your pet

If you will be traveling over the holidays and plan to take your dog with you, be sure she wears her identity tags at all times. If the tags are printed with your home phone number, consider taping over that with your cell phone number, or one for the hotel or home where you’ll be based. Being in a strange place can make pets anxious and more likely to bolt – and less likely to find their way back to you – so it’s even more essential to make sure you can be contacted

Hello! My name is Joey! I’m a gorgeous young guy, and I am very smart and sweet.  Although you’d never know to look at me (and play with me) but I have a heart murmur. Just so long as I don’t try to run a marathon, I’ll be just fine.  I’m looking for a family that appreciates a fun-loving young guy who’s uniquely handsome and friendly with both people and other cats.

What movie star would you want to portray you in a movie of your life?
Oooh! Robert DeNiro.  He may look rough and tough on the outside, but you can tell that he is just an absolute sweetheart on the inside.

If you won the lottery, what would you do?
Some would go to my favorite rescue, of course, but I think I’d spend most of it on tuna. Is that wrong?

What is your favorite song?
“Unbreak My Heart” by Toni Braxton.  Maybe if you take me home, my broken heart will be fixed!

Hamburger or hot dog?
Can I say tuna instead? Because I would definitely choose tuna.
