A total of 10 Greyhound racing tracks have closed across the country since the end of 2008 and 25 have closed since 2000. An estimated 500 to 1,000 greyhounds have been displaced as a result of each closing. Add greyhounds that have been retired from still-existing tracks across the country and you have thousands of wonderful, vibrant dogs being cared for by adoption groups as they wait to be adopted into permanent homes.

Cold in New England? Warm up with a new furry friend!

February 17, 2011 in Boston Shelter News by Tails Magazine

At Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA, there are 73 dogs and puppies along with 17 cats and kittens waiting for new homes.

Many of the dogs and puppies have come to this no-kill shelter through the rescue program Saving Pets Across America. They have been rescued from kill shelters in Virginia, Indiana, Georgia, Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee and as far away as Puerto Rico.

On Saturday February 12th, another group of 20 dogs and puppies arrived from Tennessee through the nationally recognized and Animal Planet sponsored program Last Chance Highway.

The recent New England whether has really slowed down adoptions. The dogs at the shelter are safe, but there are so many more who need help. Many people might be waiting for the warmer weather or at least not to hear about another snow storm every week before they consider bringing a new puppy or dog home. But while the cold weather is still the top story in New England, it is the perfect time to warm up with a new furry friend!

On the other hand, when businesses or organizations in your community make choices that are bad for animals, you can withhold your support because of those choices.
