It’s not just humans who suffer when families are struggling financially. Many loving caregivers are forced to make difficult decisions—from whether they can afford annual vaccinations to whether they can keep food in their pet’s bowl—due to financial stress. Sharing one’s life with a pet is a luxury, but it’s one that all people deserve to have.
Pet food pantries serve a very important function in helping keep pets with their families when times are tight. They are crucial support systems, allowing pets to stay in their homes when they may otherwise have to be surrendered to a shelter.
We encourage all pet parents who are more fortunate to donate to their local pet food pantry. Consider picking up an extra bag of kibble, some cans of cat food, or a box of treats when you go to re-stock for your own pet. Or collect donations from your friends, family, and co-workers. All donations—big and small—make a difference. If you don’t have a pet food pantry nearby, many general food pantries accept pet food and supplies.
In the Chicago area? Here’s where you can drop off your donations. Some locations also accept donations through Amazon.com wishlists—which means you can order and deliver items from the comfort of your own home. Food is crucial, but pantries collect supplies, too. Most pantries accept toys, stainless steel bowls, collars, leashes, and cat litter.
Editor’s Note: Call first before stopping by—some locations only accept donations on certain days/times.
