Please enjoy this winter treat by poet Jenny Kalahar!

Snow Cat

Like indoor sentries sitting inside at windows

Framed by streaks of frost you see them

The snow cats

One in nearly every other house on this block

They sit with their tail wrapped warmly around feet

Wishing for a stronger sun, a brighter afternoon

But the lure of sparrows on white branches

Keeps them at their watch

Eyes darting, ears twitching

Front paws shifting to keep alert

Alert for squirrels dancing along fences

And children sledding sidewalk-fast

They sit to scan this pluff and drift

Pile and blow

For they all know

Inside they’ll stay

Tucked away

And when evening darkens the snow to shadow gray

They’ll stretch and sway

And turn to find the fireplace

The sofa where you will invite them

To share a night of glow and crackle

As they snooze or listen to

Your book’s soft snow-white pages turn
