Devin’s Tails: Name A Novel About Your Pet

By Devin O’Branagan

As a writer, titles are my worst things. When it grew dangerously close to publication deadline, my great friend and writing mentor, sci-fi author Edward Bryant, finally came up with the title for my animal-intensive comic novel, Red Hot Liberty. And I held a contest to find a title for my novella about a show dog mistaken for a cowdog, Show Dog Sings The Blues. My Facebook friend, Karen Mittan won, and the title rocked. Recently, I sat pondering what to name upcoming novels and thought I would once again fish for inspiration among my marvelous Facebook friends. I asked them, “If you were going to write a novel about your pet, what would the title be?” These were some of the answers I received:

– Chris Maximilian: “Rebel Without A Cause” and “Bella is Too Sexy For Her Fur”

– Mariadel C. Ruiz: “The Great Catsby”

– Jessica Morris: “Oh the Humanity….”

– Angi Miller Candias: “The Good, the Bad and the Furry”

– Jenny Anderson Kalahar: “Are You Going to Eat All of That?”

– Barbara Dimeler: “‘Life in a Shell’ (I have a turtle)… ha ha…”

– Melanie Macek: “Unknowing Hostage: How to claim your human and their territory as yours”

– Gail Baake: “I had a dear friend that called her six mini Dachshunds ‘The Wrecking Crew’”

– Ellen Clary: “MissAdventure”

– Dee Ambrose-Stahl: “I’d write about my wonderful Emmitt, and the title would be ‘Meet Me at the Bridge’”

– Kim Campbell Thornton: “The Queen and I”

– Brenda Jo Allison “‘Really.’ When I am training my dog, she does something silly and I just look at her and say ‘Really?’”

– Martha Kinman Fay: “Unconditional”

– Chelsea S. Miller: “The Quest for Hunger”

– Aileen Walden: “How Cats Conquered the World”

drop dead on recall– Maureen Paskin: “Mud Comes In All Colors”

– Lucy Castellon Goffan: “Love Has Four Legs”

– Sue Holtz: “Eternal Souls”

– Sheri Shepherd Levy: “Mischief With Love”

– Kimberly Golden: “‘How to Raise a Human’ by DOG”

– Marsha Pike: “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride”

– Kathy Tucker: “The Cat in the Pack”

– Kimberley Pearson: “Driving Humans Mad

– Stephanie Villegas Williams: “Pack Brat”

– Judy D Rarick: “The Escape Artist”

Now, my friends, onward to write the books about your delightful- ornery- and colorful-sounding critters. Facebook friend, author Sheila Webster Boneham already has:  Drop Dead on Recall, The Money Bird, and Catwalk. Her animal-related mystery novels are delightful. Maybe reading hers and mine will inspire you to write your own. You already have the title for it!
