Devin’s Tails: Got Sheep?

By Devin O’Branagan

Gabriel the Border Collie contributed this story to my March campaign to raise money for Border Collie Rescue––thanks, Gabe!

My name is Gabriel. I’m a Border Collie. Yes, I know you’re shocked that a Border Collie can type on the computer, but I guess that means you haven’t read all about us and how we are among the smartest breeds.

Here's me, Gabriel, hanging out at the beach.

Here’s me, Gabriel, hanging out at the beach.

Anyway, I’ve been with my new mom for about six months now, ever since my other mommy died. This mommy is pretty nice and all my new Rat Terrier sisters are okay, even if they are a pain in the butt. Everything is pretty good around here. There’s only one, two or twenty things missing: SHEEP. We do not live in the country, we live in the Port of Los Angeles, which is very, very busy and there aren’t a lot of sheep hanging around. We have to drive a long way to get to the sheep. I only get to chase them once a week or once every two weeks. I don’t really like that because I was born to chase sheep. My daddy is a famous sheepherding dog and I want to be like him.

I decided to take things into my own paws and I put up this want-ad: WANTED. SHEEP. CALL GABE. I didn’t write anything else because they charge you by the letter and I only had the change I found between the seats in the car. I ran the ad so that I could have sheep all the time, and so that when they put out those DOG MOM OF THE YEAR award ballots next year, I can honestly vote for MY mom––right now her only flaw is that she doesn’t have sheep. Everything else about her is a-okay.

So far I haven’t gotten any responses to my ad. I think that’s because I couldn’t afford to put my phone number. I’m very hopeful that someone will read it and know who I am and bring me some sheep. Not sure where we will put them, but that’s not my issue. If you have sheep make sure you let me know, I’ll be right there to help you out.
