Golf fanatics recognize Paige Mackenzie as a major player on the LPGA tour. But what people may not know is that this rising star also has a soft spot for dogs, namely her rescued pup, Charlie. We recently caught up with Mackenzie to learn more about Charlie, her tips for traveling with pets, and her recent addition to the Golf Channel’s broadcast team.
TAILS: Tell us about your dog Charlie.
Paige Mackenzie: He will be two-years-old in May, and is a Yorkie mix. He is very friendly and social with other dogs. Charlie also likes people—especially if they have a treat! He loves to play fetch with other dogs because he is hyper-competitive and likes to steal the ball.
And he was a rescue?
Yes. I found him in a re-homing listing as a puppy.
Did you grow up with pets or is Charlie your first?
Charlie is my first.
What do you think is the best part of being a pet parent?
Seeing him run around at the dog park––it’s hard not to smile when he looks so happy.
Does Charlie like watching you golf?
Charlie doesn’t know what I do for a living. I tried to take him to the golf course once, but he didn’t like being on a leash around so much grass!
Do you take him with you when you travel?
I take him as much as I can when I travel. I’ll probably take him [with me] ten to fifteen weeks this year.
Yes, I expect him to meet me at the door when I walk in [to my hotel room] and it’s always a little sad when he isn’t there.
What are some tips you have for traveling with a pet?
Make sure that they get used to their crate so that they love it and feel safe on the plane. I also try to keep things as consistent as possible when packing his toys, bowls, etc. He knows when I bring out “his” stuff that he gets to go with me.
This year you are joining the Golf Channel’s broadcast team. Are you excited to get in front of the camera?
Yes. I have enjoyed all the work that I have done so far and look forward to being an official part of the Morning Drive team this year.
Are you working on any other new projects?
Between playing full time and working at the Golf Channel my schedule is pretty full!
What do you still dream of doing?
I would love to go back to all the countries I have traveled to and vacation, not work. I have been to so many beautiful places, I look forward to being able to enjoy them in a different way.
