Earlier this year, I diverged from my usual humor column to talk about an amazing therapy/service dog I know named Tyler who had been diagnosed with cancer. I asked for donations to help pay for his chemotherapy. The outpouring of generosity from so many helped Tyler’s person, Valorie, pay for his entire six month round of chemo and related medical care. Now Tyler and Valorie are thrilled to announce that Tyler has been declared cancer-free! Whether this remission is temporary or permanent, no one can predict, but this amazing seven-year-old dog has been given the gift of more time in this world to continue serving the humans he loves so much.
Tyler is a service dog to Valorie, who has Tourette’s Syndrome. He also works with children and adults who have cancer, and is a therapy dog, working with Wounded Warriors with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, and other wounds of body and soul.
Tyler brings joy to so many and I would like to devote this column to celebrating the incredible spirit he is.
The final photo is Tyler praying. Please imagine me, also praying. I pray for Tyler’s continued good health, for those souls whom he serves, and for all the other animals and humans out there taking on cancer and whipping its butt. Amen.
