Orvis Takes a “Shot” Against Canine Cancer

By Kari Remkus

The Orvis Company—seller of sports apparel and gear—is taking a stand against a horrible disease in order to help animals enjoy longer, healthier lives.

Canine cancer is the number one cause of death of dogs over the age of two.  About 50% of dogs will develop cancer in their lifetime, and one in four of those dogs will die from it.  Orvis has partnered with the Morris Animal Foundation (MAF), a non-profit organization that invests in science to advance veterinary care. MAF has funded almost 150 canine cancer studies, and its current Canine Cancer Campaign is helping scientists worldwide study cancer and develop treatment options and preventative measures.

Through the Orvis Cover Dog Contest, Orvis has raised nearly $700,000 for the MAF and its efforts to fund preventives and treatments for canine cancer. “The contest is a great way to memorialize a beloved dog lost to cancer, celebrate a dog who is a cancer survivor, or create a brighter future for a current canine companion,” said President/CEO of Morris Animal Foundation David Haworth, DVM.
