From Safe Humane Chicago:
Chicago now has another reason for being known as the “second city” – it is the city of second chances, thanks to the inner-city high school students, incarcerated teens, animal victims of violent crimes and partners who believe in safe, humane communities. In disadvantaged schools across the city, Safe Humane Chicago’s Youth Leaders are spreading messages of compassion and empathy for the most vulnerable among us: Children and animals. Incarcerated teens, many with gang ties, are learning to connect with, care for and socialize dogs who have been abandoned or abused and are living at the city’s Animal Care and Control – and they are learning interpersonal and job skills as well. And animals who have “done the time but not the crime,” who are victims of cruel owners and too often pawns in the justice system, are learning to be the loved companions of Chicago families.
Some might call these groups damaged goods, but Safe Humane Chicago only sees “Diamonds in the Ruff.”
The October 4, 2012, “Diamonds in the Ruff” event from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.at Salvage One (1840 West Hubbard, Chicago) will celebrate the people in Chicago doing the groundwork to build safe and humane communities and engage the disadvantaged in our city. Local celebrities from NBC, LeeAnn Trotter and Kye Martin, will be on hand to recognize the bravery and dedication of select Chicago Police Department officers for their part in saving animals, their families and neighborhoods from abusive and cruel situations; and some of these Court Case Dogs will make an appearance to give smiles and wiggles of gratitude. There will be savory treats (for people and for dogs) generously donated by Jordan’s Food of Distinction, Karyn Calabrese’s trio of Karyn’s Cooked, Karyn’s Raw and Karyn’s on Green, and other Chicago restaurants; sweets generously donated by Occasions Chicago Catering; and creatively packaged Chicago experiences donated by generous Chicago businesses for silent auction!
Join in to create positive change, one “Diamond in the Ruff” at a time.
