It doesn’t need to cost a fortune to make sure Fido or Fluffy is the most stylish pet out there. Get crafty and recycle an old pet food bag to create an awesome collar for your eco-friendly pet. Vickie Howell—host of DIY Network and HGTV’s show Knitty Gritty—knows a thing or two about do-it-yourself style. So get your scissors ready and create a one-of-a-kind collar for your fashionable pet!
What You’ll Need
- Pet food bag
- A poly plastic bag (the kind of bag that pillowcases and sheets come in)
- 2 snaps
- Sewing machine
Step 1: Measure.
Get your pet to sit still long enough for you to measure his or her neck. Add 4 inches to that measurement. This is the length of the collar.
Step 2: Cut.
Tear apart the poly bag so that it’s a flat piece. Do the same for the pet food bag. Cut strips out of both pieces that are 2 inches wide and the length from Step 1. Lay the food wrapper strip face down on the plastic strip, then fold both pieces in half lengthwise so that the wrapper is sandwiched between the plastic with the colorful side facing out.
Step 3: Sew.
Using your sewing machine, top-stitch the piece closed on the sides and the ends. Trim, if necessary.
Step 4: Snap.
Place the strip around your pet’s neck to figure out the snap placement. Following the instructions on the snap package, add the snap. If you’d like the collar to be adjustable, add a few more snaps.
Step 5: Embellish.
Slide the D-ring on to hold your pet’s tags. Then, if you’d like, spruce up the collar with various embellishments, such as rhinestones or fun stickers.
Want to mix it up? Use something other than an old pet food bag. Wrap the poly bag around any piece of paper—such as wallpaper, wrapping paper, your kids’ artwork, or even a thin fabric.
