Note from the Founder – July 2012

Janice Brown and LunaWith summer in full force, everyone is enjoying the outdoors, cramming as many activities as possible into their days and nights, taking advantage of the late sunsets. While many of us get sedentary during the winter, there is no chance of hibernating in July. The pressure to get out and get moving is all around—beach volleyball, jogging, biking. It is inspiring and exhausting all at once.

Fortunately, everything is more fun with a friend, especially those with four legs! Summer is the perfect time to get out with your pet and enjoy life’s physical adventures together. Challenge yourself to break out of your routine and plan an exciting hiking excursion with your human and pet friends alike. Author Ellen Eastwood shares tips from her new book to get you ready to hit the trails with confidence.

On the flipside, summer can mean unbearably hot days, preventing us from exercising outside safely. Humans can go to the air-conditioned gym, but what about our pets? Don’t worry—they have options, too. Doggie treadmills may have gotten a bad rap as tools for dog fighters, but when used in the appropriate way and under supervision, they can be the magic you have been looking for to tire out your pup, while keeping her fit and trim. They can also work wonders for dogs recovering from an injury, or those with other mobility issues. When given the chance, most animals are passionate about moving their bodies every day.

Speaking of passion, Prince Lorenzo Borghese is a perfect example of someone who is following his heart and doing something he loves. This royal bachelor is not just another pretty face—he makes the lives of animals better in many ways, from his luxury pet bath products to his commitment to Animal Aid and other groups. The topic of passion intrigued us so much that we decided to find other people in the animal industry who have chased their dreams instead of money. Be sure to check out our feature story about happiness in next month’s issue.

This is an exciting time at TAILS. I am proud to announce the debut of TAILS Pet Supplements, where “every bag gives back.” Not only will your pet enjoy high-quality supplements to keep them healthy, but a percentage of all sales goes directly to the TAILS to the Rescue Fund, supporting organizations that offer financial assistance to people who cannot afford critical healthcare for their animals. You can learn more at TailsPetSupplements.com.

Staying healthy can be fun and easy when you do it with those you love.
