As I navigate through the challenges of life, I rely heavily on the wisdom and inspiration of those before me.
Anyone who has seen my office (or refrigerator!) knows I love to surround myself with quotes. In an instant, a powerful sentence or two jars my thoughts, helps put things into perspective, and allows me to stay focused on the big picture.
On the flip side, language is not always necessary to communicate. As the old adage says: “A picture’s worth a thousand words.”
Our photo contest judges enjoyed gazing upon photograph after photograph, each one telling its own story. As always, the competition was steep and we needed help. We relied on our readers to vote for the cover—and boy, did you come through. What an amazing winning shot. How on earth do you get a dog to let a mouse sit on his head? And, what’s more, Suki the mouse even says, “Cheese” for the camera! Incredible.
Thanks to all who entered and shared your beautiful pets and special moments with us. And remember, just because your entry didn’t win, doesn’t mean it won’t show up in print or online sometime in the future. We love featuring our four-legged fans.
Unfortunately, images can also portray sadness and despair. Seeing photos of puppy mills—rows and rows of tiny cages stuffed with dogs lying in feces—is a harsh reality. We are honored to feature The Puppy Mill Project, highlighting the good work they do raising awareness about the origins of pet store animals and educating retailers about making more humane choices.
On a happier note, there are numerous pet photographers celebrating the beauty, joy, and, in the case of Seth Casteel, primitive emotions of our pets. Casteel is a long time friend of TAILS, through his work with Second Chance Photos as well as shooting our covers since 2007. We could not be happier his spectacular photos of underwater dogs went viral— receiving the attention he so greatly deserves.

Keep capturing your pets on camera and post your faves to the TAILS online communities. Photo contest or not, we love to see your babies!
Wishing you peace, love, and smiles—
