Note from the Founder – September 2011

Janice Brown, Luna, and MapleAs unique as each one of us is, there are many things human beings have in common. We all want to be heard, we all want to be right, and we all want to look good. We spend lots of time and money seeking out ways to make ourselves and our homes beautiful. Most of us, at some point or another, have even fallen victim to following a fad that bordered on the ridiculous, because it was the “in” thing to do.

Since pets are part of the family, it makes sense that our desire to stay trendy extends to furry members, as well. But let’s face it; it’s all about us. Is your pooch begging for those cute little pink bows, or are they just to please you? And the holiday sweaters? Booties? Feather boas? Admit it—your pet indulges you—but if you gave her 20 bucks and set her loose at the pet store, she would most likely not buy a new doggie wig (yes, they actually make those), but instead make a beeline for the beef jerky treats!

No matter who derives the pleasure, it’s fun to delve into the world of pet fashion, or decorate your pet’s space in a way that complements your own home and style. From eco-friendly and green products, to over-the-top haute couture clothing and furniture, it is a creative space to play.

So, next time you’re at the pet store or doing some virtual shopping, choose items to make both you and your pet feel good. As well-known and previously featured designer Nate Berkus always says, “Your home should rise up to meet you.” With so many thoughtful designs and beautiful pieces to choose from, your pet should be able to say the same.

This month, vow to make just one small change in your four-legged companion’s environment that will make both of you smile. A simple thing like recovering a dog bed or finding a more creative way to hide the litterbox can make a big difference. Be sure to check out our DIY projects in print and online for easy ways to get started.

Your pet will thank you, and you will love the new look—

Janice Brown
