Animal Rights Activists Fight to Shut Down Research Facility at Wayne State University

In late 2011, Wayne State University’s animal research program came under fire for allegations of animal abuse and cruelty. The allegations center around the controversy over a Dalmation mix named Queenie, a Husky named Jessie, a Hound/Labrador mix named Charlie, and other former pets obtained from state animal shelters. The dogs were used in cardiology experiments and were seriously harmed or killed as a result of these cruel and painful experiments.
Washington D.C.-based non-profit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) recently filed a petition with the Animal Care Division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. PCRM is a non-profit organization that advocates for ethical human medical experiments and promotes alternatives to animal research and testing.
On December 14, they also filed a complaint with the Wayne County prosecuting attorney on the grounds that the testing violates Michigan’s animal cruelty law. According to medical records obtained through Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act, Charlie experienced two major surgeries to place medical devices in her body and had weeping wounds where catheters protruded. She was forced to run a treadmill daily, despite vomiting and a high fever. She died as a result of the experiments—as did Jessie and Queenie.
In the allegations, PCRM states that Wayne State University’s use of dogs in these forced medical experiments does not represent “humane” research protected by Michigan law and requests that Wayne State University be charged with felony animal cruelty.
PCRM is circulating a petition targeting Allan Gilmour, President of Wayne State University. If you would like to sign the petition asking Wayne State University to stop these inhumane dog experiments, you can join us here.

Medical research. Interesting. Reminds me of something considered “medical research” which occurred somewhere between 1940 – 1945 in Germany. Definitly sounds cruel, not monitored and unnecessary. Beside charging the university with a crime. Remove the program. Hence, lost funding that may be used to fund the state’s anti-cruelty programs to feed, house and medically treat our animals.
Remember a society is judged on the treatment of their animals. Shame on Michigan.

You must be HEINOUS, MEAN SAVAGES to use animals. Also an old fashioned school NO ONE any good would go to-since nowadays you can use computers and not HURT animals.

Wayne State University, these inhumane dog experiments need to stop ASAP! It is beyound cruel and is dispicable that you have to do your experimenting in this way. Find another way to do your business and while you do, keep in mind how these precious animals feel due to your cruelty. If you dont stop, you will certainly get the same treatment in the future since what comes around, goes around.

Horrible news-I can not believe research needs this information.

Taking animals from shelters for the purpose of conducting cruel and painful experiments does not constitute “rescue.” PCRM is right in stating that this does not constitute “humane” research. Please put an end to it.

Research on animals is cruel and generally not needed and there is no reason for abuse.

These bastards are disgusting. Why don’t they use these “people” on their treadmill. I doubt if they know what compassion, mercy, or ethics are. Why not experiment with their kids?

There is no valid reason for torturing one living creature to extend the life of another.

Regardless of purpose (including benefit to humans) no animal should be abused!

Please stop this now, no animal should have togo through such pain, you want to experiment on a animal, try the human kind!

To the College Administrators and Faculty who partipate in research using animals. Please stop this cruel behavior. They do not match the values of this society. It is hard to imagine that such research goes on.
Educators are supposed to lead. Please be considerate of innocent animals.
