Playful kittyThere are many creative ways to use common household objects to construct new and exciting toys for our cats. Empty cardboard boxes, brown paper bags and even empty spools of thread are just some of the things we can use to keep our cats entertained around the house.

Here are a few simple ways we can give our cats new toys to play with!

Catnip Sock – use an old, clean sock filled with catnip and tied at the end. This makes a great toy for a cat. When not in use, keep the sock in a plastic bag in the freezer to keep the catnip fresh.

Kleenex Peek-A-Boo – Take an empty Kleenex box. Cut out holes of various shapes and sizes, none larger than a paw can get through. Then, place a few cat treats into the Kleenex box through the slit where the tissues normally come out. Seal the slit well with tape. Place the box on the floor for some supervised kitty entertainment.

Fishing For Fun – With all hooks removed, tie feathers or ribbon to the end of a fishing pole. Casting the toys around the house will prove entertainment for hours!

It is important to keep safety in mind when making toys for our cats. Here is a list of some of the items not recommended for use in toys. But remember, have fun and get creative with your toys!
