Dog HikingWe know that we could all use a little more exercise in our lives. And chances are, so could our dogs. Why not develop an exercise routine that allows both of you to enjoy that time together while getting fit? Hiking not only offers the potential for beautiful sites and landscapes but also gets you both outside in the fresh air. November 17 is National Take a Hike Day, and in honor of this holiday, your friends here at TAILS want to inspire you to get out there with your furry friend and blaze some trails.

But before you go scaling Mt. Everest, make sure that you do an accurate assessment of both your’s and Fido’s current fitness levels, and plan accordingly. Click here for tips on backpacking and hiking with pets. If you’re still on the fence about whether or not to hike with your favorite four-legged pal, here are our top five ways decided you’re both ready to em”bark” on a hike together, here are four reasons to get out there now (courtesy of DogHikingCanada.com):

  1. Exercise – Yes, you do need more than just the hike from your office chair to the copier. And your dog would probably appreciate something other than the five-minute leash-led potty walk he’s accustomed to.
  2. Bonding – Any exercise or activity with your dog helps create a lasting bond with trust and camaraderie.
  3. Variety – Different trails, different terrains – every hike could be a new adventure!
  4. Reducing Boredom – Everyone knows the same old walk around the block is exercise – but it can lose its challenge and appeal when it’s expected and predictable. Try something new!
  5. Socialization – You could both benefit from meeting with other hikers – both the two-legged and four-legged varieties. Get out there and make some friends!
Are you still reading this? Then you’re not lacing up your hiking boots and getting Fido’s leash. Take a hike!
