63 year-old Carl Kryszak is sure glad he has Buddy, his cat, watching out for him. Kryszak had dozed off in his chair, but was awakened when Buddy hopped up into his lap. Kryszak, a navy veteran and former volunteer firefighter, noticed smoke and sprang into action alerting his apartment complex neighbors.

Kryszak told his neighbors about this heroic black tuxedo cat that saved the day. He has had Buddy for 20 years and describes him as an affectionate, miracle cat. All occupants in the 24-unit Country Glenn Apartments were safe and there were no injuries.

Ray Pauley, a Grand Island Fire Company representative said it was the first time he had ever heard of a cat alerting his guardian to a fire.

The fire caused roughly $5,000.00 damage and is still under investigation. Thank goodness for Buddy, or things may have been much worse.
