Help Protect the Wild Burro

October 12, 2011 by Jillian at Tails in Home with 1 Comment

wild burrowA massive petition was recently launched on Change.org to bring attention to the killing of wild burros in Texas. The campaign is rapidly gaining momentum and many supporters are rallying help from others by re posting this heartbreaking story.

Rangers in Texas’ Big Bend Ranch State Park have been ordered by Governor Rick Perry to massacre these animals to make way for the restoration of big game to attract wealthy hunters. Armed with sniper rifles, even shooting from helicopters, rangers are slaying these animals in their natural habitat where they are harmless and defenseless. If the rangers do not make a “kill shot” they callously leave the wounded animal to suffer and slowly die. In the past few months rangers have killed 71 burros.

The Governor has been working with hunters to release bighorn sheep, a very prized animal, into the park. Big game hunters will pay up to $150,000 for the opportunity to hunt these sheep. The release of bighorn sheep is being heavily subsidized by private individuals.

Unfortunately, at this point there are less than 300 wild burros left in the park. The killing of these burros is also the killing of a legacy of nature, culture, and history.

If you are against the senseless slaughter of these tiny, harmless donkeys please re post and sign the petition below to make your view heard.
