Berry, the German Shepherd who portrayed Padfoot in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is hoping his next leading role will be cast with a loving forever home. Berry who is 10-years-old and his best buddy Porridge, a 13-year-old Shepherd/Lab mix, are up for adoption with the German Shepherd Dog Rescue in the UK.
So how did the star-studded Berry and his pal Porridge wind up homeless? Their guardian/trainer/stuntman wasn’t able to care for them anymore due to the “constraints of his career”.
The German Shepherd Dog Rescue website tells the touching story of Berry and Porridge from their point of view.
Sadly, situations like Berry’s occur far too often as more and more pets are considered “disposable.” People turn to rescues and shelters on a daily basis asking for their pets to be re-homed for a variety of reasons, which in my opinion, should have been considered before taking on the responsibility of a pet.
The German Shepherd Dog Rescue put it best about the value society places on pets as whole. “It is time for this country to stop and think, think about dogs like Berry and Porridge who through no fault of their own genuinely need help from rescues such as ourselves but whose resources are being drained due to those who just do not care about the dog as a living being, but see it as a commodity that can earn them money and when of no further use or an inconvenience, can be tossed away as easily as an old piece of furniture. We have become a throw-away society.”
