Q: After years of going in the litter box, my cat has begun pooping right next to it. We recently had to change the type of litter because I am pregnant and cannot be exposed to regular cat litter. Should we switch back, try a new one, or will she get used to it?

A: The cat may “get used to” the new litter, but it sounds like that is not happening. I would recommend going back to the original litter, and have your partner change the cat’s litter box. While there is a low-risk of transmission of disease, when possible, pregnant women should not directly handle soiled litter. If this is not an option, keep trying different types of litter to find one your cat will tolerate. When making the change, do so gradually, adding a bit at a time to allow your finicky feline a chance to get used to the change.
