Ask The Trainer with John Mannering

John ManneringDogfather

Q: Now that it’s nice out and we are spending more time outdoors, my dog also gets more “backyard” time. Even though he is supervised, he still tries to dig in my garden, trample my plants, and run in the bushes. Right now I yell at him and put him back in the house. Then he whines and barks to join me again, and we seem to go in circles all day! This is not relaxing for me or my dog…please help!

A: First, you have to ask yourself why he is doing that. The simple answer? He is a dog. It is his instinct to do so. As his guardian, you need to be his leader, or supervisor, and teach him otherwise. I would recommend a long-line or leash to immediately correct any bad behavior, and don’t be afraid to use obedience commands. Dogs need rules and boundaries, instead of just letting them always act as dogs do. Obedience commands are a guardian’s best friend. Good Luck!
