Note from the Founder – May 2011

As anyone with pets or children knows, the moment you are officially deemed “proud parent” you are also unofficially named “chief photographer” (among other things!) I believe it is a title most of us enjoy, especially given all of those adorable, unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime moments that our subjects bestow upon us on a daily basis.

Given my love of photography, I jumped at the chance to test out the coolest photo apps I had so much fun turning images of my pets and my kids into drawings, rainbow colored tunnels, and other Dr. Suess-like pieces of art, all with the touch of a button. And don’t worry about storing or showing off your cool pics … there’s an app for that too!

After pouring over the thousands of adorable photos entered in this year’s photo contest, it appears that our readers know how to handle themselves behind the lens. But it’s never easy to whittle down so many beautiful images of animal love to just a few, which is why we enlisted your help! Thanks to everyone who went to TailsInc.com to vote for the cover winner. We are so happy that Skyler is gracing this month’s cover as this year’s Photo Contest winner. This sweet, senior boy is not only adorable, but has three legs and is a Cancer survivor. What an honor to celebrate this special dog.

However, as much as we love the good times, we must remember those who are not as fortunate. It will take a long time to heal from the devastation and horrible events that occurred in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami. It is an opportunity to come together and help the people and animals in need as they rebuild and look ahead to the future. Currently there are many wonderful people working in Japan to help the animals. Check out page 17 for some places you can donate to aid the groups in their efforts.

May is a month for rebirth, new life, and an opportunity to reflect on just how lucky we are, right in this moment.

Wishing you lots of happy time outside in the sunshine–
Janice Brown
