Ask the Vet with Michelle M. Guzik, DVM

Como Park Animal Hospital

QuestionWe’re moving from Arizona to Minneapolis in a few months. Are there things we should do to prepare our 10 year old Chihuahua for the cold? Will she be prone to illness in the new climate? Are there symptoms we should be looking for?

AnswerGood luck with the move, and welcome to the Twin Cities! Luckily, illness should not be a big problem. It is a big change, but just think of the perks…like taking your pup clothes shopping for sweaters and coats. And while they may be cute, the new clothes are more than just a fashion statement; They are a must to help maintain body warmth. I also recommend spending only short periods of time outdoors during the winter. Frostbite and major drops in body temperature can be life-threatening. Your dog should do just fine with some clothing and short stints outside, just enough to go to the bathroom then back inside.
