My husband and I rescued Ollie, our beloved Shepherd mix, from a shelter about three years ago. I am pregnant with my first child, and I’m starting to get concerned as to how Ollie will react to the baby. Is there a way to prepare Ollie for our baby’s arrival?
Congrats on the pregnancy! I would suggest some refresher work on Ollie’s obedience, or if he has never had formal training or start now! Commands such as “stay” or “place” are especially important so Ollie learns to stay where you put him. His response to the command “down” should also be strong. If Ollie has not been exposed to children, begin to expose him in a controlled setting. If you have ANY question as to how Ollie will react to children, seek the assistance of a professional dog trainer to evaluate his behavior and see what areas you may need to work on. With patients and consistency, Ollie and the new baby should be fast friends!
