QuestionI just brought a new puppy into my home and I want to start training her right away. There are so many trainers out there, and I am overwhelmed with all of the options. Can you give me some tips on things I should look for in a trainer?

AnswerThe two most important things you should look for in a trainer are experience and the ability to communicate. You want to be sure that the trainer has worked with your breed, or is experienced with the problems you may have with your puppy. It is also very important that your trainer not just tell you what to do, but why you should do it. The ability to communicate and explain things is vital to a good working relationship. Make sure the trainer has different training options for you — such as group classes and in-home programs — not just a “one size fits all” approach. Of course, ask for references, both professional (vets, groomers, etc.) as well as those from previous clients.
