The founding organizations of the Indianapolis Animal Welfare Alliance are launching a joint effort to find new families for 500 homeless pets during the month of May through a “500 Pets of May” promotion launching Sunday, May 1, at Mutt Strut, a dog walk benefit at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Spring is a time when thousands of unaltered cats and dogs breed unwanted litters, resulting in the number of unwanted pets increasing dramatically in area shelters.
The Alliance encourages people to adopt during May, and emphasizes the need to find new homes for pets as well as provide added incentives for potential adopters. Each participating Alliance member, along with several rescue groups, will have its own unique promotion.
“It’s important that all of us in animal rescue and welfare work together to find creative ways to get these animals into loving homes,” said Sue Hobbs, Indianapolis Animal Welfare Alliance board secretary and Cats Haven volunteer. “The ‘500 Pets of May’ is the first of hopefully many promotions that the Alliance will do with local groups.”
