The 2011 MSPCA Pet Food Pantry List is now available at www.mspca.org/foodpantries. The MSPCA’s list is a compilation of more than 60 food pantries throughout Massachusetts willing to accept and distribute pet food to those in need. As the MSPCA continues to care for thousands of homeless animals annually, pet owners are citing the cost of feeding and providing care for their pets at an increasing rate. In 2010 the MSPCA’s four Animal Care and Adoption Centers cared for 456 animals that were surrendered due to cost of ownership compared to 278 animals surrendered for the same reason in 2007.
”The MSPCA works tirelessly to keep families together, however the human/animal bond is tested daily by outside forces including the economy and financial hardship,” said MSPCA-Angell president Carter Luke. “We commend these food pantries for understanding that families frequently include pets and that the ability to provide an animal’s next meal is not a certainty for many pet owners in Massachusetts.”
The 2011 MSPCA Pet Food Pantry List is compiled through an all volunteer effort to help families who need food and also to help people who would like to donate pet food (dogs and cats). The entries were accurate when posted, however changes may occur. The MSPCA suggests contacting the listed agencies to confirm hours before donating food or seeking assistance. Some food pantries did not want to be listed to prevent receiving too much food, so the MSPCA advises residents to contact their local food pantry if they are not listed, as they may take an individual donation.
