Hi Ya’ll! With Mardi Gras right around the corner, there is no better time than to celebrate one of my favorite cities, New Orleans!
Recently I was wandering the streets of NOLA in the French Quarter and came across Pet Asylum pet shop, who’s mantra is “Rebuilding New Orleans One Pet At A Time.” Upon entering the store, you will be greeted by Monkey. Monkey was rescued by shop owners Sharon and Brenda. Monkey is actually a poodle that suffers from a genetic defect leaving Monkey with no hair on his ears. What you might not know is that Monkey is a local celebrity spreading the message of pet rescue and the end of puppy mills to all that meet him.
Besides spending his day as a local celeb, Monkey earns his keep by greeting clients at Pet Asylum. To send Monkey fan mail or to contact Pet Asylum at 513 Dumaine Street in New Orleans. Move over Jiggy from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Monkey is NOLA’s saint!
At Pet Asylum, I bought the “We’re Only Saints On Sundays” canine calendar for a friend of mine that has a love affair with the Crescent City too. All of the proceeds from the calendar by New Orleans Fairy-Tails go directly to help rescue dogs in the French Quarter especially with spaying and neutering. To order a calendar or learn more about New Orleans Fairy-Tails visit www.neworleansfairy-tails.com. Besides cute pet photos, the calendar also features local establishments that are pet-friendly or businesses that are pro-rescue! Spoiler alert: Yes, Monkey makes an appearance too in the calendar. Anyone that has been Bourbon Street will get a kick out this photo with these dogs with the hand grenade drinks.
I also picked up a Voodoo rawhide for my dog Simon.
Next door to Pet Asylum is Chi-wa-wa Ga-ga. Yes, say that 3x fast! Chi-wa-wa Ga-ga is where Justine Roig and Elayne Angel have a must-see store with any dog apparel you can imagine! They sell dog bikinis, Mardi-Gras themed items, glasses, hats, neckwear..and much more. The dynamic duo can also customize clothing orders. Check out their website and selection at www.chiwawagaga.com. They mainly cater to dogs but also have items for cats, rabbits, ferrets and other small pocket pets. I also LOVE their Facebook shirt for pooches. They also have all sorts of information on low cost spay/neutering and animal charities. I also bought a souvenir for my cat NOLA (named after New Orleans) of a Mardi Gras collar, of course! We named her NOLA for her comeback courage (just like the residents of New Orleans). NOLA earned the name NOLA after being rescued from a horrible neglect case that left her with frostbitten ears.
Let’s just say I’m “Ga-Ga” about this store.
Next time you are in the Big Easy, stop by Pet Asylum and Chi-wa-wa Ga-ga for your pet’s souvenir!
