Devin O’Branagan’s Water Bowl Chat: Pets Have Personal Mottoes, Too!

February 24, 2011 by Devin O'Branagan in Devin's Tails, Home with 5 Comments

In my RED HOT series of comic novels, Talisman the prissy, pampered Australian Shepherd wears a variety of neck scarves with mottoes to advertise her moods. She is a canine woman who values being able to speak her mind.

TalismanOne of her favorite scarves is CALL ME ELLEN, because Ellen DeGeneres is her personal role model. (They both have blue eyes, shaggy hair, and love to dance.) Then there is her LEAVE ME ALONE AS I’M VERY BUSY AND IMPORTANT scarf, which speaks for itself. When she visits her former boyfriend, she is filled with canine angst and her scarf says JUST LIKE ROMEO AND JULIET. And on those days when she is willing to date someone new, her scarf declares she is LOOKING FOR LOVE.

It occurred to me to wonder what the mottoes of my friends’ pets might be, so I put a shout out on my Facebook page.

Peeing was the single most popular topic:

NEVER PASS ON AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO PEE!

SHE WHO PEES LAST, PEES BEST.

PEE LIKE NOBODY’S WATCHING.

DON’T RUSH MY WALK. I’M READING MY PEE-MAIL!

IF I CAN PEE ON IT, PLAY WITH IT, SLEEP ON IT, OR EAT IT…IT’S MINE!

SOME DAYS YOU ARE THE DOG. SOME DAYS YOU ARE THE HYDRANT.

Then there were definite divisions in the dog and cat households:

Cat: DON’T GET MAD, GET EVEN. THEN SHRED THE EVIDENCE.
Dog: WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU A LITTERBOX, EAT THE EVIDENCE.

Dog: WASN’T ME.
Cat: I’M WITH STUPID.

Cat: YOU AREN’T WORTHY.
Dog: YOU ALWAYS BLAME THE DOG!

Cat: AS A MATTER OF FACT, I AM THE DIVA.
Cat: THIS IS MY WORLD AND YOU WILL RUN YOUR LIFE AROUND MY NEEDS
Cat: YOU MAY BE MY PERSON, BUT I’M IN CHARGE AND YOU JUST DON’T KNOW IT YET.
Cat: I’M THE CAT. ‘NUFF SAID.

Then there were these most curious mottoes:

AT LEAST I’M NOT WEARING THAT STUPID DRESS TODAY.

WHERE’S THE BEER?

Of course, there were the dogs-with-attitude:

THAT’S MY STORY AND I’M STICKING TO IT.

IT’S GOOD TO BE QUEEN.

THROW THE FRISBEE OR DIE!

I PROMISE I’LL BEHAVE TODAY <evil grin>
I PROMISE I’LL BEHAVE TODAY <evil grin>
I PROMISE I’LL BEHAVE TODAY <evil grin>

I DIDN’T DO IT – MUST HAVE BEEN THAT OTHER PUP.

IF I HAVE IT, IT’S MINE. IF YOU HAVE IT, IT’S MINE.

TROTTIN’ FOR TROUBLE.

GO AHEAD AND TRY IT – I DARE YOU!

KISS MY FLUFFY RED STUB.

Finally, there were these mottoes that simply prove why we love our pets so much:

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE LOVE, BABY!

IT’S GOOD TO BE BEAUTIFUL.

WHATEVER THE QUESTION MIGHT BE, THE ANSWER IS FRISBEE. IT-WILL-NOT-GET-AWAY.

WILL BARK FOR FOOD!

LIVE – LOVE – BARK!

WAG MORE, BARK LESS!

CARPE DIEM

All of this talk about mottoes got me to thinking about my own. I decided to adopt, “DEAR GOD, HELP ME TO BE THE PERSON MY DOG THINKS I AM!”
