Wilmette Pet Center has been offering purebred puppies and kittens to Chicago area families for the last 20 years. In May of 2007, Dave Cozzolino became the new owner of the store. Dave was the store manager prior to the acquisition and had always felt uncomfortable selling “designer” puppies knowing there were so many wonderful dogs waiting for homes in pounds and shelters.
Since then, he has been on a relentless mission to transition the store from puppy sales to puppy adoptions, and the time has finally come for what is a major shift in the way Wilmette Pet does business – by committing its space solely to Adopt-A-Pet’s shelter dogs and cats.
Wilmette Pet began working with Adopt-A-Pet over ten years ago by fostering cats, which it continues to do. The store will now be devoting the rest of its cage spaces to Adopt-A-Pet’s homeless dogs and puppies as well, thereby turning this corner of the store into a 100% dedicated Adoption Center.
Over the last few years they have been working hard towards developing a business that does not need to rely on the sale of puppies and kittens; they have built a loyal customer base by providing excellent customer service, as well as expanding to offer an extensive inventory at fair prices.
It takes a community to advance a cause, and the community has indeed rallied around this one. Customers of the store should know that they are the biggest factor in making this work. The store is so grateful to the many “regulars” who have helped out by playing with and walking the dogs, brushing and socializing the cats, and donating towels for bathing and paper shreds for bedding.
In addition, vendors of the store are offering support by donating their nutritious foods and safe, quality toys to the pets awaiting adoption. Mid-Central Printing around the corner generously donates full-color window posters featuring each of the foster pets to showcase them to passersby.
The store also participates in volunteer programs as well as employs individuals who have extra challenges in life. Having caring people with special needs taking care of homeless dogs and cats helps teach them valuable life skills while working with the store towards the greater good.
This is a huge and exciting step for the Wilmette Pet Center…Please join them the weekend of November 20-21 for the “New Leash on Life” Celebration.
On Saturday Wilmette Pet and Adopt-A-Pet will be marching in the Wilmette Holiday Parade. After the parade and on Sunday the celebration continues at the store with special Customer Appreciation discounts, complimentary pet goodie bags and lots more. Please join in celebration and support of this worthwhile cause.
