There’s a good chance that dogs and cats were on the Mayflower! The earliest mention of dogs in the New World comes from a 17th-century journal called Mourt’s Relation. According to this account, John Goodman brought two dogs, an English Springer Spaniel and a Mastiff, who were involved in the first explorations of Cape Cod. Cats were also likely brought aboard the Mayflower to help control the rodent population.
