Best Vet & Best Holistic Vet

Best Vet:

Dr. Teresa Garden
Animal Health and Healing

How does it feel to be a Readers’ Choice Award winner for Best Vet?
I feel very happy, overwhelmed, shocked and appreciative of our clients for voting for my practice and me.

How long have you been in your profession?
I’ve been a vet since 1985, 22 years.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Being able to offer my clients products or services that they can’t get anywhere else when their pets are really sick. Here, we specialize in holistic services that can help heal our patients in ways that Western medicine can’t.

Any crazy stories to share?
The most memorable stories are when pets with a two-month life expectancy end up living two to three years beyond that expectation. We have a thing here called the “20-year Cat Club.” It’s just amazing and miraculous to see cats live a few years beyond that even.

Do you have any pets at home?
Yes, I have two dogs that were both rescued. Stevie Wonderful is my 14-year-old, blind Pekingese who was rescued from a puppy mill. Priscilla is my Mexican Hairless dog who was rescued from a hoarding situation.

How do think your industry has changed over the years?
I think it’s changed dramatically in Western medicine in the variety of diagnostic procedures we have now and in the degrees of specialization. We now have dermatologists, ophthalmologists, and emergency vets. We’ve changed holistically in the way people take care of their pets. They’ve seen how well holistic medicine has worked on their [own] bodies, so now they’re more willing to try holistic medicine on their pets.

Best Dog Bakery

Vicki Sence
Three Dog Bakery

How does it feel to be a Readers’ Choice Award winner for Best Dog Bakery and Best Dog Treats?
Great! It’s wonderful validation that all the hard work pays off.

How long have you been in your profession?
My “past life”, as I refer to it, encompassed 18 years in the book industry—both retail and wholesale. That “life” ended when Three Dog Bakery opened in 1999.

What drew you to your profession?
I was tired of the rat race, so I entered the dog race! Just kidding; I wanted out of the corporate world and wanted to spend more time with my furry family, and share the joy I have found with dogs with other dog guardians.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Getting to work with some of the not-for-profit groups by helping them raise funds while hosting fun events here at the store.

Any crazy stories to share?
A staff member at a vet clinic told me that one day their contractor was driving through our plaza, saw the word “bakery”, and decided to pick up some pastries, as a change from donuts, for his crew. He didn’t tell us that they were for people, but when he brought the box in to the clinic, she recognized our logo, and told him that the pastries were for dogs. He said that since the store smelled so great, and that the brownies, cupcakes and cookies all looked “real,” he assumed they were for humans. He did admit that the one he ate didn’t taste bad, just not sweet enough!

Do you have any pets at home?
Yes, and they also get to come in to the store with me. Maximilian and Jesse are standard Longhaired Dachshunds, almost 11 years old. Daily they teach me how to appreciate life, and to not whine about things you can’t change.

How do think your industry has changed over the years?
When we opened eight years ago, we were an anomaly, pawticularly in the Midwest. Gourmet treats, birthday cakes, human-grade food, and treats were not as common then. Now, it seems that more people treat their pets as family, and just as they try to eat more healthfully themselves, strive to do the same for their pets. I think it’s also evidenced in that more people are seeing holistic vets, taking pets to specialists (Max loves his acupuncturist!), joining dog parks, using pet sitters or doggie day care, holding dog birthday parties, taking dogs on vacation with them, going to dog swims, dining out with their dogs, etc. Now stores and people like us are considered more the norm, not “those crazy doggie people!” —KB
