Readers’ Choice Awards 2007 – New Jersey

November 8, 2007 by Tails Magazine in November 2007 with 0 Comments

Best Doggie Daycare, Best Dog Trainer, & Best Place for Agility/Instruction

Winner:

St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center
22 Prospect St, Madison
(973) 377-0116 • StHuberts.org

How does it feel to win in three categories?
We are, of course, absolutely thrilled! We work very hard to provide quality programs and services for pets and their people, and to hear that those programs are worthy of being considered “the best” by our members and users is incredibly rewarding to us all. All the staff who make these programs so successful are really excited about all the votes from Jersey Tails readers. —Nora Parker, executive vice president

What is your favorite part of the job?
Seeing the achievements people make with their dogs. Many come to us frustrated, sometimes close to thinking about surrendering the dog due to [his] behavior. Seeing the progress and not giving up makes it all worth it. Seeing a relationship change from one of turmoil to love is heartwarming. —Pia Silvani, director of training and behavior

What drew you to your profession?
I started taking agility classes because it looked as if it would be fun for my dog and a way for me to keep in shape. I enjoyed it immensely and love sharing the sport with others. —Carole Daggett, Agility Program manager and instructor

Do you have any crazy stories to share?
One of our favorites: While pooper-scooping the play field one day we noticed something unusual in one of the piles. Always watchful of our campers’ health, we donned gloves to investigate further and discovered that one of our little darlings had “processed,” without any damage, a $20 cash donation! We carefully washed it and turned it in to the office, but were never able to find out which of several suspects had raided Mommy’s purse before arriving at camp. —Becky Burton, Doggy Day Camp manager —RK

How long have you been in your profession?
I graduated veterinary school in 1980, but it wasn’t until 1996 that I left conventional veterinary medicine to practice holistic modalities to care for my patients.

What drew you to it?
It was definitely my clients who drew me in. They would ask, isn’t there anything else I could do for their pets to make them healthier? I realized that I only had a half-full medical toolbox and went on to take courses in acupuncture, chiropractics, herbology, homeopathy, cold laser therapy, ozone therapy, etc.

Do you have any pets at home?
Billie Holiday, my sweet 10-year-old Lab/Pit mix whom I found wondering near the Great Falls in Paterson at about 10 weeks of age. Copper, my chubby 6-year-old Lowchen who loves everyone. And Julio, my 12-year-old cat who never wants to come inside.

How do think your industry has changed over the years?
The number of holistic veterinarians is rising fast. More clients are seeking us, and more conventional vets are asking questions and accepting our help in partnering to deliver better care for their patients. Conventional vets are following our lead in reducing vaccinations and feeding healthier diets. Many more courses are being offered and many new products are available. Research is coming out too so that skeptics are feeling more comfortable that there is scientific proof for what we’ve been seeing all along. Holistic veterinary medicine certainly has a bright future. —Renee Krejci

Best Overnight Boarding

Winner:
Club Barks
86 Lackawanna Ave, Ste 306,
West Paterson
(973) 81-BARKS • ClubBarks.com

How does it feel to be a Readers’ Choice Award winner for best overnight boarding?
We are very excited. We are not in this business to be awarded, but it feels great to have the consumer rate us highly. It just affirms that we are doing something right and doing it well.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Playing with all the different dogs that come through the doors and rehabilitating some of the rescues. Each dog has [his or her] own unique personality and story. We enjoy getting to know all of them like they are part of our own family.

Any good daycare stories?
One of our daycare regulars knows how to open doorknobs! One day, about a year ago, she was in a pen full of 15 dogs. That pen had access to the lobby. We were talking to a customer at the front desk and all of a sudden, the lobby had 15 dogs running around! It was like a jailbreak! Who knew that dogs could open door knobs? We have since installed special locks on all doors with doorknobs. In this business, dogs always keep us on our toes and even help us improve our facility.

How do think your industry has changed over the years?
We are seeing a large amount of corporate influence on the business. Unfortunately, the facilities lose the personal touch. I think what separates us from the chains is our customers know they will be talking with either one of us, not an unfamiliar face. We were affiliated with a chain that is just starting, but we made a decision to stay independent allowing us full control over how we run our facility. Our hope is to open a second Club Barks in the next year or two that will maintain the same high standards we institute today. —RK
